Many of the qualities you look for in a wireless headset are the same ones you'd want to find in any audio gear—tone, build quality, and reliability in mind . As such, we listen to each review model while playing different genres of games, listening to music, and watching movies with bombastic sound effects and surround mixes—think less Werner Herzog, more Chris Nolan. We also run a pure range of frequency response across the so-called sine wave "swoop" (almost always the full 20-20,000 Hz these days), and in the case of surround sound headphones, we'll listen to the audio position tests like the p>

There are a few wireless-specific things we need to test too: battery life, charging time, range, and latency. The former is pretty self-explanatory but, in addition to a 'everyday use' battery life test, we're also running the headset at full volume to find out how quickly the charge drains under those conditions. For the charging time to check, we...well, we charge for the headsets and note how long it takes. P>

Range and latency are more tricky to test scientifically. However, having a pleasant walk around the house gives a good indication of range, and latency ultimately comes down to perception. After several days of use, we're in a great place to make the call on a headset with all that accounted for. P>

Most major USB/3.5mm gaming headset players have a wireless option, but usually only one. As such, the current list of competitors in the market is a bit thin. Expanding the range when you look as far as console-specific wireless boxes, but we've stuck to officially supported PC models in the interest of ensuring full compatibility. P>

The wireless PC gaming end offers fewer audio hardware choices than wired devices. However, it's still a big market and it's populated by models with incremental improvements and rising prices from the same manufacturers. We haven't tested every model available but we have done our best to seek out the cream of the crop.
