Samsung and NatGeo use Galaxy S21 Ultra to record 8K underwater video of tiger sharks

Last year, Samsung released an 8K video of the Arctic Circle

shot on a Galaxy S20+

However, the phone remained above the freezing waters. This year, the company partnered with National Geographic Traveler India to do the opposite: capture 8K footage under the warm waters of the Maldives.

The

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

was in the hands of NatGeo explorer Malaika Vaz, who traveled to Fuvahmulah Island, aka Shark Island. The phone was used to shoot 8K footage and stills, which was used in the video below. -below.

A few things to know before attempting such a dive. Firstly, Vaz is a professional with a lot of experience in shooting wild animals. Secondly, the IP68 water resistance rating of the phone is only for the fresh water (and only up to 1.5m deep). As you can see in the video, to go deep into salt water you will need a case.

Anyway, most phones let you take photos while recording video, but having 8K footage makes it easier because you can do it after the fact - a single frame of 8K video has a resolution of 32MP, making it a high resolution photo in its own right.

And you can see Vaz using this option in the video, as well as taking some photos.NatGeo Traveler

posted some pics

(although, unfortunately, not in full resolution):

“While filming underwater in the Maldives, I was surrounded by tiger sharks, hawksbill turtles, schools of fish and coral, and was able to capture very high resolution video footage of these species with almost no effort. The Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G's 8K Video Snapshot allowed me to focus on shooting sharks with the certainty that I would never miss an opportunity to take a great series of images! As an explorer and filmmaker National Geographic, I would say that my experience shooting the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G was beyond special,” said Malaika Vaz.
