Samsung patents a bizarre 180-degree rotating pop-up camera system
While the under-display camera market is still in its infancy,
Samsung
explore more opportunities with pop-up camera styles. Recently, Samsung patented a strange 180-degree rotating pop-up camera system.
This camera, when displayed, operates the main set of cameras as a selfie camera. It will be music to the ears for selfie lovers. Well, this is not the first time that Samsung has explored the kind of rotating pop-up cameras.
In 2019, Samsung launched Galaxy A80, which tipped the rotating camera module in which the main cameras rotate and become selfie cameras. This trick helps in taking selfies with improved image quality.

According to
LetsGoDigital
, a patent published in January 2021 by the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) presents a Samsung phone with a rotating camera array.
The phone boasts a bezel-less design thanks to the rotating camera module, however, if a user triggers the selfie button, the rear camera slides up and rotates 180 degrees to face the user who clicks the selfies .
Although this module allows the main camera of the phone to act as a selfie camera, its mechanism is extremely complicated. The patent reveals that the module can be further modified to house two rear cameras. So, more room for a large lens angle.

A multitude of gears and a propeller shaft will present durability issues
In theory, everything sounds good. But in reality, the picture is a little different. Notably, the mechanism involves a multitude of gears, motors and propeller shafts, which will certainly raise durability issues.
The whole camera mechanism looks complicated. Moreover, with a host of moving parts, you don't even have to think about fixing this module. So dropping this phone shouldn't even be a thought for the user, if Samsung adopts this camera module.
But Samsung may be right to explore more opportunities with pop-up cameras. This is because under-display camera technology is still very advanced and a lot of work needs to be done to improve the quality of the display. 'picture.

Personally, my OnePlus 7 Pro has never given me any issues with the pop-up camera. It still feels as solid as it did when purchased.
Samsung is working on a successor to the Galaxy A80, namely the Galaxy A82. There is no sign that the Galaxy A82 will be the device to sport this original camera module.
Nothing is confirmed yet, and we could see this idea completely scrapped, so all we can do is wait and watch for further developments.
