It's the battle of the big smartphone brands on the one hand Apple and Samsung and in the corner of the competitors, Huawei which despite having a tarnished image, is determined to try to overthrow one, if not both, of the market leaders. smartphones with their new P30 Pro smartphone.
Their big claim to fame lies with the Chinese companies that co-developed the Leica camera and their proprietary Kirin930. processor which they say has "superior intelligence" and advanced dual AI than their competitors, although one has to wonder who they consider their competitors if a recent comparison made at a recent press briefing in Sydney is something to do (more on that later).
The two new Huawei offers consisting of the P30 and the P30 PRO are both good if not excellent smartphones.
They are expensive at $1099 for the P30 and $1599 for the P30 PRO.
But considering the baggage the Huawei brand carries and despite how much money Huewei throws at the Australian market, they won't surpass Apple or Samsung when it comes to brand pedigree.
Both of these brands earned their honors the hard way, now Huewei is trying to buy theirs.
< p> This is a brand that is seriously trying to try harder with a fair amount of dubious claims made by the Chinese company that thinks its camera and new processor are superior to Apple offerings and Samsung. We've done extensive testing over the past week with the Samsung S10+ against the Huawei P30 PRO, which is the only logical contender when it comes to cameras, as both are high-end Android devices.
Available in two Aurora colors and a new color called Breathing White, the new Huawei devices have everything to please both Samsung and Huawei has been able to integrate an Android device.
If battery life is your goal, the P30 PRO seriously delivers with its big 4200mAh battery that charged extremely quickly thanks in part to its 40w super charger.
There's also 15-watt wireless charging capability. In fact, the device is so good that it can be 70% full in 30 minutes using Huawei's 40W SuperCharge wired charging system.
The new phone is built around the 7nm-and-under Kirin 980 processor. the hood packs 8GB of RAM and storage options from 128GB to 512GB.
The display is a 6.47-inch curved OLED panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The panel is made by Samsung.
Camera
The big talking point with this device is its camera as this is where Huawei kicks off the superiority of the device.
< p>Is it better than the Samsung S10+? The answer is both yes and no.Their new high-end device has four different camera lenses on the back, including a 5x optical zoom lens, an ultra-wide-angle lens, and a primary lens with the Chinese tech company claiming to have “the camera for most low-light sensitive smartphone” on the market.
The low-light camera was developed with German camera company Leica and is said to be four times more sensitive. lighter than last year's model.

While it's good in low light, the AI seems to struggle to read certain conditions.
As far as I'm concerned, the bulk of smartphone cameras that are used by the average user as photo and shooting devices, the destination scene, friends on a trip or in a restaurant or that photo magical family that you want to cherish and need to take quickly.
This is not the case. about having to configure the device, it's all about and hope you have the right picture.
The P30 PRO and the Samsung Galaxy S10+ allow this.
However, with the P30 it's a matter of luck and I suspect it's because the artificial intelligence built into both devices compensates differently with each shot.
Huawei has built a new AI-driven HDR+ mode that creates an intelligent exposure map for the entire frame of a photo, then adjusts each section of the image. It will detect faces and landscapes, compensate for grass or sun, and process each appropriately.
However, the images we took with the new P30 PRO were often much darker and did not reflect the true colors that the shooting image depicted as shown in this face shot and cap shot, or they were super bright. The same goes for some Samsung snaps.
Above: Huawei P30 Pro. Below: Samsung Galaxy S10+ shot. This image is closest to natural light and the actual color of the table and hat.
By comparison, the S10+ shots were mostly bright and representative of the actual conditions the image was taken in.
The outdoor shots were totally different, both smartphone cameras delivered similar images, but the Huawei still failed to deliver true colors and the images tended to be noticeably darker while the Samsung images were slightly baked when it comes to color saturation.
The peculiarity was that Huawei images in many cases looked sharper, especially when zooming in on an image.
The S10+ has a 10X zoom lens and the Huawei P30 PRO a 50X zoom lens due in part to the fast processor.
The P30 PRO also has a 40-megapixel sensor that by default produces 10-megapixel photos by combining four pixels into one, but each pixel is now different.

Huawei replaced the RGB sub-pixel layout with a layout featuring red, blue and yellow color sensors.
The yellow sensors absorb both red and green light, Huawei says this new arrangement absorbs 40% more light than RGB, leading to better and cleaner photos, I disagree.
The SuperSpectrum part is on both the P30 Pro and the P30.
At a launch event in Sydney, Huawei tried to turn journalists around by claiming that their new P30 Pro offered a superior image to their rivals. They even hired a former Fleet Street reporter to present their findings to the media.
They featured two images titled 'Photo in the red sands of Uluru', one was taken with the P30 Pro and the other was a photo of the same image taken on what they described as a competitor camera .
The P30 Pro image was taken (full) at 16.1 and the other at a much smaller width of around 4.1. It wasn't a real comparison.
We then dug a little deeper to find that the competition photo was not taken on a Samsung smartphone but on an Apple iPhone which, despite being a competitor, is not a device based on Android.
Then there was the issue of color saturation.
I've been to Uluru with professional film crews at different times of the year and I've never seen dust or dirt as red as this P30 Pro indicated.< /p>
Our results are that this camera is comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S10+ but not better.
It excelled when zooming and was also able to deliver sharp images, but that would often falter as seen in these two images below.
ZoomHuawei says it has a field of view greater than 120 degrees, although they declined to share exact numbers. When framing a shot or switching from an ultra-wide lens to zoom, the camera compensates and colors are excellent.
I used the zoom camera to film across the Northbridge golf course to houses 2 miles away. I was surprised at the clarity I got even at 10x zoom where the camera is superior to the Samsung Galaxy S10+

The combination of super wide and close-up cameras will be useful for many people, but it presents a potentially difficult shooting situation when trying to zoom in and if shots like this are your job, you'll need a tripod and a very good grip and will be able to remain very stable.

The zoom was great, it's very hard to reach just by holding the P30 Pro in your hand. Fingerprint scanner.
S10+ and Huawei P30 Pro come with new fingerprint scanner Huawei also uses an in-display fingerprint sensor on the P30+ instead of an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor like Samsung did on the Galaxy S10+,
Huawei continues to use an optical scanner, which might be less secure as it only scans an image of your fingerprint. I found it fast and accurate, but the Samsung method is safer if security is important to you.
What is also useful is Huawei's on-screen indicator. With both devices, I connected within a second of touching the screen.
Conclusion.
It's a beautiful camera that looks and performs like a high-end premium smartphone. It has some advantages over Samsung S10+ but it is not better than Samsung S10+.
The camera is questionable and although it zooms significantly better than the S10+, images taken instantly and on demand are no better than Samsung's final top model.
What is becoming clear is that Samsung and Huawei are now offering products that are significantly superior to what Apple is offering with their latest iPhones.
What also adds to the superiority of the two Android devices are remarkable processors and a Google Android operating system that offers excellent capabilities for high-end Android devices.
The other advantage of Samsung is that they have a superior OLED display. While both Huawei and Samsung devices come with a Samsung OLED display, Samsung has kept the premium OLED display for its own device.
For me, I still prefer the Samsung Galaxy S10+ and the battle between Huawei and Samsung to be the Android leader should lead to one thing, innovation with both companies fighting to outdo each other, and the big winner is you the customer .
