If you told the average smartphone user that the prices of the Samsung Galaxy S have only gone up over the years, they would probably believe you. However, you would be lying. There were a few years where prices actually went up. decrease -

including 2021 believe it or not

.If you look back, there are a lot of interesting price changes happening.

Samsung Galaxy S series: A history of Android's biggest name

Since Samsung is the largest smartphone maker in the world and the Galaxy S series is its most popular family of phones, we thought we would review everything from the start. Below is a list of all the major phones Galaxy S and their original launch price. At the end you will find a graph giving a compact view of how these prices have changed over time.

Please note that we will not include all variants of the Galaxy S series here. Mini variants from the mid-2010s, for example, will not be included. We also ignore Fan Editions, Lite Editions, Active Editions, etc., in favor of focusing only on the main entries in the series.

Samsung Galaxy S price: $399

Samsung

The original Samsung Galaxy S had many different names. The Samsung Galaxy Proclaim, Galaxy S Showcase, Galaxy Vibrant 4G, Galaxy S Captivate – the list is quite long. However, we will always remember it as the Galaxy S, the one which started it all.

Here in the US in the year the phone was launched in 2010 it was incredibly difficult to buy a smartphone in an unlocked form factor instead you had to visit your carrier and buy a phone through their middleman. You will get a small portion of the cost of the phone rolled into your bill over the next two years as part of your exclusive contract. As such, it is difficult to determine exact final prices for the Samsung Galaxy S as they would change from one operator to another.

However, we've determined that the average amount is around $399, which equates to around $477 in 2021 dollars. Seems like a bargain compared to today's smartphones. But keep in mind that this phone was much less advanced - and much cheaper to produce.

Samsung Galaxy S2 price: $549

The Samsung Galaxy S was a huge success for the company. Due to its success in the market, all eyes were on the Galaxy S2 in early 2011. Unfortunately, Samsung went wild with the follow-up and released several phones with totally different designs and specifications, all using the Galaxy S2 branding. It was so complicated that you could buy a Galaxy S2 from

AT&T

, and it would be a completely different phone compared to the device of the same name from

T-Mobile

.

Still, that didn't stop Samsung from selling Galaxy S2 phones like hotcakes. The phone was even more popular than the original Galaxy S and put Samsung firmly at the top of the Android smartphone world.

Again, though, it was hard to buy the phone unlocked in the US. With that in mind, most consumers probably didn't even notice that the phone's list price had risen significantly to $549. Pricing, after all, was hidden in their mobile carrier's contract. Luckily, it wouldn't be much longer before regulators forced carriers to end the practice.

Samsung Galaxy S3 price: $599

Samsung entered 2012 as the king of smartphones. In the third quarter of 2011, it overtook Apple's sales in smartphones

-

a first for the Korean company. Not content with stopping growth, Samsung launched what is arguably

one of the most popular phones of all time

: the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Fortunately, Samsung has started to tone down its habit of releasing many different phones with the same name. The Galaxy S3 looked very consistent no matter where you got it. is a whole different story.

Despite the significant increase in specs and design, the price of this phone has not increased much over the previous model. In 2012, the Galaxy S3 cost around $599. This represents one of the smallest increases in the long price history of the Samsung Galaxy S.

Samsung Galaxy S4 price: $649

Statistically, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is the

greatest android phone ever

.With 80 million units sold, the only other Android phone that comes even closer to sales is its predecessor, the Galaxy S3. 'units.

Again, Samsung only nominally increased the price of the phone over the Galaxy S3. Of course, US consumers probably wouldn't have known it was costing them $649. unlock the phone, but only a small fraction of US buyers have gone that route.

Many hardcore smartphone fans saw the price of the phone very clearly in the summer of 2013. That was when Samsung and Google teamed up to release a Google Play edition of the phone. It featured a bootloader unlockable and a stock Android

-

a breath of fresh air for people who hated the Samsung TouchWiz Android skin.Samsung and Google only teamed up to do this for a few cycles, but

we wish it lasted longer

.

Samsung Galaxy S5 price: $649

Until now, the prices of the Samsung Galaxy S had only increased. In 2014, for the first time, Samsung launched the latest Galaxy S device at the same price as the previous year: $649.

Even though the price remained the same, several new specs and features were released with this phone. This included a fingerprint sensor in the home button, the

Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor

, and a 16MP rear camera lens.

Unfortunately, Galaxy S5 sales didn't even reach Galaxy S4 sales. That's why the S5 design was the last of its kind. In 2015, Samsung would completely revamp the Galaxy S's aesthetics. S5 is remembered by fans.

Samsung Galaxy S6 series price: $649 - $799

In 2020 we

ranked all Galaxy S phones

from worst to best. Unfortunately, our friend the Samsung Galaxy S6 came in at the very bottom as our least favorite in the lineup. Sorry, mate.

Although it remained in last place in our hearts, it represented the third time in a row that the base price of the Samsung Galaxy S remained unchanged. Of course, if you consider that Samsung removed the MicroSD card slot, the 'IP rating and the removable battery, you wonder why it hasn't dropped.

For the first time, the manufacturer also launched a more premium version of a Galaxy S phone. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge was essentially the same phone but slightly larger and with curved glass on the sides. doesn't really offer much other than the normal model, the Edge variant costs $100 more for a total of $749. Not content to stop there, Samsung has finally launched a Galaxy S6 Edge Plus for $799 .

You should also note that due to poor sales, Samsung dropped the entry price of the Galaxy S6 to $579 shortly after launch. a Galaxy S phone. It wouldn't be the last.

Samsung Galaxy S7 series price: $669 and $769

With sales of the Galaxy S6 series incredibly disappointing, Samsung needed a hit – and fast. Enter the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. Both phones took what worked with the Galaxy S6 but brought back the things that Samsung had ignored the previous year. This included the MicroSD card slot and an IP rating. Unfortunately the removable battery never returned.

Still, the Galaxy S7 family fares much better in the market than its predecessors. The phone's range was only nominally more expensive than the Galaxy S6. However, it offered significantly more specs and features. Likewise, the larger Edge variant costs around $100 more.

Unfortunately, Samsung was still not selling as many Galaxy S7 phones as it had hoped. This forced it, once again, to lower the prices of both phones in the middle of their life cycle.

Samsung Galaxy S8 series price: $749 and $849

In 2017, Samsung inquired in several ways. It dropped the Edge brand, which just seemed to confuse buyers. Instead, it launched the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. As the 'Plus' moniker suggested it was a larger version of the base model, which is why it cost more. It made a lot more sense.

The Galaxy S8 lineup represented a seismic change for the design of the Galaxy S series. For the first time, the fingerprint sensor moved to the back of the phone, allowing the front to be fully displayed (with oversized bezels, of course). This big change must have made Samsung quite confident as it raised the entry price to $749 - even after having to cut the already lower price of the Galaxy S7 a few months later. early.

Things must have worked out, however, as Samsung didn't cut prices on these phones midway through their lifecycles.

Galaxy Note 7 fiasco

the previous year may also have had an influence on the prices of the Samsung Galaxy S.

Samsung Galaxy S9 series price: $719 and $839

If you go back to the early days of the Galaxy S line, you see a lot of similarities. The Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4, and Galaxy S5 all featured the same basic design elements. Since then, however, we've seen the line change a little.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus Redux

This is not the case with the Galaxy S9. The 2018 iterations of the Galaxy S legacy looked very similar to the 2017 models. The biggest change was the movement of the rear fingerprint sensor from the camera side to the bottom. The Galaxy S9 Plus also features a second rear camera, which is the first time this has happened on a Galaxy S phone.

Perhaps due to the similarity of these phones, Samsung dropped the entry-level price slightly. The Galaxy S9 landed at $719 while the Galaxy S9 Plus came in at $120 more. The company felt probably safe with those Samsung Galaxy S price differences due to that second lens on the Plus variant.

Samsung Galaxy S10 series price: $749 - $1,299

In 2019, it was four years since Samsung launched two main entries in each new iteration of the Galaxy S line. If it could be two phones, why not three? Why not four? With the Galaxy S10 series, Samsung went crazy and launched four phones at once.

Galaxy S10 Plus review

The two main entries in the series remained the same as the previous two years: the Samsung Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10 Plus. These came in at $899 and $999 respectively. Samsung also launched a smaller model and cheaper known as

Galaxy S10e

, which cost $749. Then, at the other end of the spectrum, it launched the

Samsung Galaxy S10 5G

, which ended up being something of a precursor to the Galaxy S20 Ultra. This phone cost $1,299.

In 2020, when Sammy launched the next set of phones on this list, he simultaneously slashed prices for the Galaxy S10 line while keeping them in production. It was a way for budget-conscious buyers to get some good hardware for less money than the wallet-ripping Galaxy S20 series.

Samsung Galaxy S20 series price: $999 - $1,399

Samsung Galaxy S prices in 2019 were all over the place. The Galaxy S10e cost $749, while the Galaxy S10 5G cost almost double that. With the Galaxy S20 lineup, Samsung chose to ditch the low end and go straight to the high-end. At launch, the cheapest Galaxy S20 phone was $999. The Galaxy S20 Plus started at $1,199.

The

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

, in particular, went way overboard. With a starting price of $1,399, it was one of the most expensive "regular" phones the company ever launched. If $1,399 wasn't enough for you , there was even a $1,599 model with more RAM and storage.

Obviously hindsight is 20/20, and Samsung probably now realizes that was a mistake. Granted, the company couldn't have known a global pandemic was imminent when it launched the Galaxy S20 series. Yet the insanely high prices of these phones ensured that they would be bad sellers at a time when people left and right were losing their jobs.

Thankfully, Samsung didn't make that mistake again in 2021.

Samsung Galaxy S21 series price: $799 - $1,199

David Imel / Android Authority

Samsung's bottom line was hit hard in 2020 when the Galaxy S20 series failed to win over consumers. This year, the company rectified that mistake by drastically reducing the entry cost of the Galaxy S21 family. And it didn't even need to reduce the overall quality much to do so.

The lowest-end Galaxy S21 starts at $799. That price gets you the all-new

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888

processor (or the Exynos 2100 in other parts of the world). It also gives you a solid triple-lens rear camera setup, a good amount of RAM and internal storage, and a cool new design aesthetic that has l look rather classy.

In another smart move, Samsung has kept its “everything but the kitchen sink” mentality with the Galaxy S21 Ultra. $199. This range is probably Samsung's most inclusive. It allows buyers of all budgets to get a Galaxy S phone.

Time will tell if these Samsung Galaxy S prices work out for Samsung. Hopefully they do, though.

Samsung Galaxy S price: the historical chart

Below you will find a graph that gives an overview of the main entries of the entire Galaxy S family. You can see that the prices are increasing steadily over time, but there are a lot of fluctuations from year to year. the other. Don't forget to rate this huge dive from last year to now.

While we can't see into the future, this chart makes it look like Samsung Galaxy S prices in 2020 will be as high as they have been for quite a while. Unless global economies rebound magically over the next 10 months or so, it's highly unlikely that Samsung will attempt to hit the price of the Galaxy S20 any time soon.

Of course, long gone are the days when you could pick up a Galaxy S flagship for less than $700. Luckily, the Fan Edition line seems to be doing a lot for Samsung. Here at

Android Authority

, we called the Galaxy S20 FE

the best smartphone of 2020

, so Samsung is clearly onto something there. It will be very interesting to see what the Galaxy S21 FE looks like. Could Samsung land our top award with the same phone line two years in a row? Stay tuned!
