Things have leveled off in recent years when it comes to exclusives, but throughout the generation the corner of a Sony machine has built up a healthy catalog of games in every genre imaginable.

Its successor, the PlayStation 5, is backwards compatible with nearly all PS4 games, meaning you'll likely find yourself reverting to previous-gen games on your new machine. Or, maybe you're still shaking the PS4 since PS5 systems have been so hard to come by.

Nioh 2

Koei Tecmo's

Nioh 2

is one of the most difficult games

souls

-like genre, which is already famous for its relentless challenge.

Nioh 2

doesn't feel unfair. However, it gives the player a ridiculous number of options. These include an insane amount of weapon types - swords, dual swords, axes, dual axes, and switches among them - as well as trees of expanding skills filled with abilities to help defeat the demonic yokai of feudal Japan. It follows the same trial and error formula of the

souls

series, with players returning to a shrine upon death and spending money to level up, but throwing into other players' minds to keep things interesting. Depending on the spirit, they may be able to help in difficult areas of confrontation in a duel to the death with valuable equipment in play.

Nioh 2

is a sillier game than its predecessor (and most hardcore action-RPG titles), which keeps things light between the brutally awkward moments. A major supporting character uses a monkey spirit as an ally and sometimes mimics its dance , and a goat spirit Billy speaks English but with a goat-like voice fry. Given how stressful the game can be, these characters are appreciated and cherished. (We also recommend giving the first

nioh

try it too.)

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen

Magic.

Set after Order 66 which destroyed most of the Jedi,

Fallen order

features an ancient Padawan who must run to protect a powerful object containing important information prized by both the Rebels and the Empire. The game never lets up from its opening moments through the closing credits, and it's filled all the Force powers and acrobatic moves you could want a Jedi to use.

God of the war

The original three

God of the war

games, as well as the prequel

god of war ascension

, are violent, over-the-top, and often ridiculous games that focus on the anti-hero Kratos and his fight against the gods and monsters of Greek mythology. After so many games, the formula had become obsolete, so developer Sony Santa Monica returned to the drawing board for her 2018 reboot/sequel, simply titled

God of the war.

The result? A more grounded and intimate adventure that breaks down Kratos' character and turns him into a more approachable hero. Combat has also been radically changed, focusing more on strategy than blind button mashing, and new one-on-one encounters with Kratos' son, Atreus, ensure that every fight is always fresh.

Surprisingly enough, the game eschews the linear structure of previous games for the more open Metroidvania style we've seen become so popular in action RPGs of this generation.

Marvel's Spider-Man

Miles Morales

This game is much shorter but is arguably just as (if not more) full of heart than the first entry. Miles has different powers from the original Spider-Man, such as his Venom attacks and the ability to turn invisible, which feels like a breath of fresh air compared to the first game.

But above all else, Miles Morales is a timely experience, drawing on a cast of characters mostly made up of people of color. As Miles is Afro-Latino, the game focuses on black and Hispanic culture in a clever way , authentic and tasteful – and developer Insomniac Games deserves praise for pulling that off.

The buttery-smooth combat of the first game returns, but it's coupled with a cinematic story spanning four different worlds, a number of extra Adventures to complete, six cooperative Strikes, and a competitive multiplayer component as satisfying as

Titanfall 2

Where

Champ de bataille 1

.

Destiny 2: Forsaken

added plenty of worthwhile additions to keep Guardians glued to their controllers. From the excellent Baron boss fights to the new Triumphs and Collections systems to great new environments like Gambit,

Forsaken

brings the already great

Destiny 2

formula to new heights. You can gain access to the entire

Destiny 2

experience by buying

Destiny 2: Forsaken – Legendary Edition

. It comes with the base game, the first two expansions, and the

Forsaken

makeover.

The most recent expansion,

Beyond Light

came out in November 2020 and is beloved by the community thanks to some new features, improvements like faster load times, and lots to do. Even better is that Bungie is planning a new expansion called

The Witch Queen

for release sometime in 2021, so there's plenty to look forward to.

Final Fantasy XIV

When the MMO

Final Fantasy XIV

originally launched in 2010, it was derided as one of — if not

the —

worst games in the entire series. Square Enix wasn't content to just kill off its enormous online game, however, and instead chose to completely rebuild it into a new version called

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

. Later shortened to just

Final Fantasy XIV

, it's one of the only true MMO games available on the PlayStation 4. But don't let the MMO aesthetic deter you, as it is one of the greatest games ever made.

Several patches and paid expansions of

Final Fantasy

have been released over the last few years, including 2019's unbelievably amazing

Shadowbringers

, which kept up the trend of new dungeons, a new

Deny

-inspired raid, new classes and races, several new playable areas, and an increased level cap for every one of its classes. A new expansion called

Endwalker

is due out sometime in the fall of 2021.

Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled

We've reached the point in contemporary video gaming when spin-offs of classic series are getting remastered and remade. Usually, this would cause us to boo and hiss, but

Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled

delivers the frenetic and goofy action of the original kart racer with a gorgeous new coat of paint. After the fairly stale

Team Sonic Racing

, it's the perfect substitute for a

Mario Kart

game on the PS4.

With the power of the internet, you can race against your friends online for the first time in

Crash Team Racing

, and the game also includes some of the content first seen in

Crash Nitro Kart

. The PS4 version comes with exclusive skins, as well, as the game series comes home to its original console.

Gran Turismo Sports

Polyphony has crafted one of the most realistic and engaging entries in the entire series with

Gran Turismo Sports

. With support for 4K resolution, 60 frames per second, and HDR, you'll be able to see the tread of your tires and every drop of rain falling on your windows, and more than 150 different vehicles to choose from.

There are also driving assist functions to enable less-experienced drivers to enjoy

Gran Turismo Sports

, as well as a “driving school,” and provided that your stomach can handle it, the game also supports PlayStation VR — this isn't some tacked-on mode, either, but rather a full 360-degree mode showing the entire interior of the vehicle as you race.

Wipeout Omega Collection

It has been a few years since we've gotten a new entry in the science-fiction racing Wipeout series, but several of its best games are available on PS4 in the

Wipeout Omega Collection

. Bundling in

Wipeout HD

,

Wipeout HD Fury

, and

Wipeout 2048

, the games were remastered to support 4K and HDR on PlayStation 4 Pro, and textures were completely reworked to look much better up close.

Wipeout Omega Collection

gets even better with a PlayStation VR headset, as the included VR mode moves the action to a first-person perspective so you can truly experience the larger-than-life loops and twists you go through in each race.

MLB The Show (Series)

MLB The Show 20

is the only baseball simulator on the market, but that advantage hasn't made Sony San Diego complacent. The latest game has received big overhauls to everything from batting to pitching, with more hands-on opportunities for the best players, and the Road to the Show mode has been reworked to be more challenging and rewarding. March to October, introduced this generation, has also been streamlined to deliver the season's most exhilarating games more quickly.

The

MLB series

is not a power fantasy, particularly when batting. Getting even a single can be a challenge if facing a talented pitcher, but the thrill of perfectly timing a swing and knocking a ball into the gap makes it all worth it.

NBA 2K (series)

2K Sports has been the king of basketball for years, and the experience has never been more realistic than it is on the PlayStation 4. With player-models that are almost photorealistic, it's sometimes hard to tell that you're playing a video game or watching a live NBA game, and there are enough modes included in

NBA 2K20

to keep you busy for the whole season.

From the popular “MyCareer” mode — focused on a single player rising through the ranks — to the MyTeam online mode, there's always

something

you haven't done before, and improvements made in each new installment only improve

NBA 2K

around even more.

Pro Evolution Soccer (series)

It isn't as popular as FIFA, but Konami's

Pro Evolution Soccer

games still have plenty to offer soccer fans. New features included in recent games include strategic dribbling, which gives you significantly more control over the ball in your possession, as well as more realistic ball movement.

If you prefer to team up with a friend when playing online, you'll enjoy

ESP

' online cooperative mode, and the random selection option gives you a chance to play against similarly skilled players in a snap. The game is also visually stunning, with players recreated down to their shirt size, and

reworked facial animations

tell you exactly what they're thinking after a big play.

Rocket League

Is it soccer? Is it basketball? Is it something else entirely? It doesn't really matter in Psyonix'

Rocket League

, the hybrid racing game that replaces human players with rocket-powered vehicles capable of soaring into the air to knock oversized soccer balls into the net.

Despite its simple concept, mastering

Rocket League

demands practice, as the top players are capable of manipulating their vehicles down to the smallest turn in order to deflect a ball or get into position for the perfect pass. With other courses mimicking sports like basketball and a

tonne

of post-launch content already released, you could easily drop everything you're doing and play

Rocket League

for weeks on end.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games have restored glory not only to the Tony Hawk video game franchise but to skateboarding games as a whole. The remake bundles the first two Tony Hawk entries and tweaks the game significantly. The graphics are brought up to modern standards, as are other important areas like menus, game modes, and characters.

What hasn't changed? The gameplay. The original games are still remarkably fun to play today, even if hampered by their aging graphics and antiquated presentation. If you played

Tony Hawk

back in the day, you'll love the nostalgic music. If this is your first time, you'll love the unique skateboarding gameplay that remains without peer today.

Assassin's Creed Origins

There are a lot of Assassin's Creed games, and while most are high-quality experiences, it's easy to see why

Origins

is one of the most beloved in the series. With this entry, the series merged into the RPG space, evolving from its action-adventure roots and doubling down on a deep progression system with more complex mechanics. While some fans weren't into the change, the majority of players embraced it and often cite

Assassin's Creed Origins

as their favorite entry in the long-running franchise.

In

Origins

, players get to explore ancient Egypt, with tons of variation in the locales you can visit. Of course, the Pyramids of Giza make an appearance, as do other famous landmarks like the Great Sphynx. Tying everything together is a more robust combat system that features light and heavy attacks — much like what you'd find in an action RPG. With tons of different loot options that range in rarity, you're able to customize your character to your playstyle with ease.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Despite being around for 15 years, the Yakuza series has only recently gained popularity in the West, partly thanks to the release of

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

. This seventh mainline installment marks a major turning point for the series, featuring a robust turn-based combat system instead of the beat 'em up mechanics from other entries. This change is welcome and feels more engaging and varied — with tons of different options at your disposal. It almost feels like Pokémon in a weird way, with several party members that all have a wide array of moves to choose from.

Aside from the robust combat system,

Like a Dragon

has some of the best characters we've seen in an RPG, thanks to the funny and heartfelt writing. The main character, Ichiban Kasuga, is somewhat of a bonehead at times but always remains likable — as do his party members. You're sent on a journey with these characters, who stumble upon a series of political events that unfold in such a smart way. The story always keeps you on the edge of your seat, which makes

Like a Dragon

hard to put down.

Call of Duty : Zone de guerre

Call of Duty : Zone de guerre

didn't invent the battle royale subgenre of games, but it certainly capitalized on it and made substantial improvements. This free-to-play game launched in March 2020 and runs on the same engine as 2019's

Modern Warfare

, offering familiar gameplay and mechanics. Part of what makes this game so engaging is its deep systems, with a slew of intricacies that can be tinkered with across its weapons, strategies, and gameplay settings.

Since there's an element of randomness and chance, along with 150 players, no two matches play out the same way. There's something so exhilarating about properly coordinating with your team, especially when you make proper callouts that result in a win. As you play, a deadly gas slowly closes in on you, bringing you closer to the remaining enemy players. This creates a flow that increases the stakes as the match goes on.

This mechanic is present in a lot of other battle royale games, but

war zone

also has unique features that allow it to stand on its own. Things like the contract system, the Gulag, the Loadout, perk mechanics, and more give this game its own identity, leading to over 80 million players since its release.

war zone

is a game that requires a lot of skill and time to master, but once you reach that point, earning a victory remains satisfying even if it's your first or 100th win.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

When it was revealed,

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

caused a bit of a stir among the community due to its change to a first-person perspective. After all, the series has always been presented in third-person, so why fix what isn't broken? In hindsight, this is one of the best decisions Capcom could have made, as it served as a refresh the series so desperately needed. When you first start playing, this doesn't exactly feel like a Resident Evil game, but after about an hour or so, it clicks, and in many ways, feels more like a core title than some of the recent entries.

This is due to doubling-down on the survival horror mechanics — which is lacking in

Resident Evil 5

and

6

. The constant threat of the Bakers chasing you around the spooky house is akin to Nemesis from

Resident Evil 3

, while the puzzles are smart and keep you on your toes. The shift in perspective makes the game feel more personal, which adds to the horror. It's easy to disassociate when you can see your character being stalked, but when it's in first-person, it feels like it's

tu

. This idea is even more in PlayStation VR. That's right, the entire game is playable in virtual reality, though we only recommend doing so if you plan on making your way through one of the most frightening experiences in video game history.

Hitman 3

Though it's popular on PS5,

Hitman 3

is also playable on PS4. We're thankful for this because it means much more people can play it.

Hitman 3

is the conclusion of the World of Assassination trilogy, wrapping up the story in a neat bow. And while the story is engaging, the real star of the show is the gameplay. From a design perspective, it's superbly impressive how this game works, offering so many different ways to complete your objective.

On the surface,

Hitman 3

is about taking out your target(s), but how you choose to do so is entirely up to you. Therein lies the genius of the game's design, allowing each level to be your playground. For instance, you can certainly just walk up to your target with the heaviest firearms you can find, but doing so will force you to handle things Rambo-style. Clever players will instead take out their enemies in a much more stealthy way, such as pushing them off the top of a skyrise when no one is looking or by disguising themselves as a bodyguard to get in close for the kill. However you choose to tackle things, be aware that there is plenty of room for creativity and experimentation in

Hitman 3

, which is why it's one of our favorite action stealth games in recent memory.
