Historical

]
VRChat was the first launched on
MicrosoftWindows
and
Oculus
Rift on January 16, 2014. It was later published on
Steam
in 2017, which gave accessibility to non-Oculus VR users for the first time, and Oculus Quest in 2019. It currently supports all Oculus headsets, minus Oculus Go, through the Oculus store; all helmets
HTC
,
Windows Mixed Reality headsets
and the
Valve Index
via
SteamVR
. Notably, it also supports full body humanoid avatar tracking via
Long Live Trackers
where the
Xbox Kinect
module, although none of these accessories are required to play. Via modification and external software, accessories such as face tracking, haptics, and VR treadmills become compatible for use in VRChat.
Despite the name of the game
VRChat
,
it is not mandatory to own a VR headset or
a head-mounted display
(
HMD p>
) to play.
Unfortunately, users playing without a VR headset don't have the benefit of manually moving their appendages, and can only use one hand when interacting with an object using the mouse. Few of the contents in the worlds are exclusively manageable by those playing the VR game which requires two hands, but this is on a case-by-case basis and sometimes unintentional.
Gameplay

]
When the player first starts VRChat, they take on the avatar of a generic gray robot and are transported to a private tutorial world where they learn how to move, look, use the menu, and interact with objects . At the end of the tutorial, the player is completely free to know where to go next, what to do, and who to talk to. Naturally, users will want to find a
avatar world
, a user-created world with a collection of many free-to-use avatars in the form, including but not limited to
anthropomorphic
animals
and
kemonomimi
avatars.
Unlike games like
SecondLife
, VRChat does not have an official currency or currency system yet, but a “CreatorEconomy” system is in the works. VRChat does not rely on advertisements from third-party companies. VRChat has the option for users to support the game by subscribing to VRChat Plus for $10 per month or $100 per year. Although the game was released in 2014, the developers still consider the game to be in
Early Access
, and may change their motivations for advertising and motto in the future.
There are many public and private environments of all genres for the player to explore. Players can choose to join a public instance, or create a private instance to be alone or invite friends after adding them. The type of privacy of the instances created depends on the player and follows the different levels:
Audience
- Anyone can join
Friends+
- Your friends, and their friends, etc. can join
Friends
- Only your friends can join; friends of friends are excluded
Invite+
- Players and friends of players must request to join your instance, unless you or an invited user's social status is set to "Join Me" p>
Invite
- Players must send a membership request to join, unless your social status is set to "Join Me"; friends of friends are excluded
The types of user-created worlds range from fantasy, games, dance clubs, personal worlds and homes, and real-world recreations, though they are not officially categorized. In the World tab of the VRChat menu, players can choose a world to have in a personal list to visit later, or they can set the world as their personal home, which allows the user to load into the world by fault at each start. the game.
Many worlds include the use of mirrors, which the player can turn on or off to watch the reflection of their avatar or other users standing nearby. Mirrors are normally the butt of jokes within the VRChat community, as cliques of users commonly dubbed
inhabitants of mirrors
, can only look in mirrors with their friends, and not walk away or do anything else. Mirrors are a default asset of the SDK for VRChat, which is why it is abundant to find mirrors in many worlds.
VRChat has the option for users to open the menu and click on the other player which opens another menu which can allow the player to befriend, mute, hide their avatar or block them altogether. It also allows a button to show the stats of the avatar they are using and show the avatar editor. Players can also filter player rank optimization through the menu's Security tab, which can automatically adjust game performance by toggling or limiting user trust ranks. It can allow a user to filter audio, avatars, particles, shaders, and sounds emitted by an avatar.
Trust ranks
[
to modify
]
the
Trust Ranking System
is a system exclusive to VRChat. Trust is earned by playing the game, adding friends, and downloading content. It is possible to lose trust in the game, which can happen when users block, report and/or dislike, or dislike by multiple users at once, as well as breaking items in VRChat's
Terms of use
and
Community Rules
. It is theorized that many social offenses in a short period of time can lead to automatic downgrading, but it is possible to go back over time. Players who are on a VRChat account
(not a Steam or Oculus account)
, and who are in the rank of new user or higher will have the privilege to upload avatars and worlds to VRChat; this is done to prevent spam. Otherwise, Trust Ranks do not affect anything the player accesses on the platform. You can find out a user's trust rank by opening the quick menu and looking at the user's nameplate, white being brand new to VRChat and purple being a seasoned user. The different levels of the trust ranking are as follows:
Normal ranks
Visitor (grey)
- The default rank of every user starting VRChat for the first time. It is estimated that a visitor has approximately less than twelve hours of playing time.
New user (blue)
- At this rank, players will be able to download worlds and avatars as long as they have a compatible version of Unity and the VRChat SDK.
User (green)
Known user (orange)
- People who have this rank or higher can hide their rank to appear as a user (green).
Trusted User (purple)
- This is the highest visible rank to achieve in VRChat at this time. It is estimated that this rank can be achieved by frequently playing the game for at least a year and downloading content.
Other ranks
Nuisance (dark gray)
- A negative ranking lower than a Visitor. Users of this rank are automatically muted and their avatar hidden from everyone. You can choose to view or manually re-enable a Nuisance user. This ranking can be achieved by being muted, blocked, and/or reported multiple times within a short period of time as a visitor or new user, or by violating the VRChat Core Terms of Service or Community Policies at any rank.
Veteran (yellow)
(hidden API rank)
- A rank higher than Trusted User with no benefits. Users who have this rank now display as a trusted user, but this rank can still be seen using mods and hidden API tools.
Legendary (pink)
(hidden API rank)< /p>
- A higher rank than a veteran user without any benefits. The leaderboard was given to those who made a significant change or contributed to VRChat more than others, primarily through content creation before 2019. This leaderboard was removed from the game's UI, but n is more achievable in the API, this ranking is immune to downgrading via blocks, mutes, caches, etc.
VRChat team (red)
- This ranking is for VRChat administrators and developers. However, the current VRChat UI only displays staff as trusted users for everyone, unless the staff member chooses to display as staff.
Reviews

]
Several users have openly criticized VRChat's optimization since its inception, citing that VRChat relies on outdated versions of
Unity
game engine that uses only one core of a computer's processor. The VRChat developers countered this claim, saying that VRChat has been running on multiple cores since Unity 5.6. Users have the freedom to upload avatars with realistic abilities never before seen in social games by adding assets to their avatars such as
shaders
, which are a lightweight filter for various effects on avatars or objects;
dynamic/physical bones
, often referred to as "shake physics" that allow an avatar's skeletal structure to move fluidly over parts such as hair, ears,
tails
, and
boobs
;
particles
, which can emit bursts of scattered light on concentrated or fluid parts of the avatar. Adding multiple of these assets on a single avatar can potentially affect game performance for users, especially if they have a low-end computer.
The community also complained and expressed concern about
avatar crasher
(less called
clappers
), which is a flaw made by malicious gamers that may allow an avatar to have an unauthorized amount of particles, meshes and/or shaders, which may cause a series or ray to crash or lag of users on that user's will due to the engine's inability to process so many effects at once.
Players using malicious mods clients, or cheats, can steal (
"rip"
) the private avatar(s) of a victim through the acquisition of avatar identifiers. Although this occurrence is extremely rare, and VRChat official staff are actively fighting against it. More often there have been user cases
redistributing
avatars (
"basic models"
) that are paid through third-party websites such as
BOOTH
,
Gumroad
Where
Patreon< /p>
; this method is unfortunately more common, and is not easy to trace. VRChat has not implemented any method to verify the legitimate purchase of an avatar by a user.

Anyone with a computer and an internet connection capable of meeting the game's minimum performance standards can access VRChat.
the furries
have slowly flourished in the platform, and created several communities within each other, evolving to the point where
in line
furry conventions
took place within VRChat with its various pros and cons. The popularity of VRChat and virtual reality in general has grown exponentially among
furry fandom
during the
COVID-19
pandemic in 2020.
A marketplace for 3D avatars and models
fursona
grew with the popularity of users interacting with VRChat. There is a debate that
avatars
are an excellent alternative for
the fursuit
. The advantages being that they are cheaper, more dexterous and they don't break or wear out over time. Accessories that are generally not allowed during a
furry convention
, such as swords, can be brought to the virtual convention as they will not harm users. p>
It is said that
Japan Meeting of Furries
was the first to implement a virtual reality furry convention.
[1]
The team
JMOF
recreated a virtual interpretation of the
Hotel Leisure
in< /p>
Toyohashi, Aichi
, Japan. While the first event was mostly attended by Japanese users, people who spoke other languages were free to attend. Event gadgets included a live stream
live
of physical convention attendees while streaming the VR show at the in-person convention, demonstrating one of the first examples of a< /p>
hybrid convention
.
Furality Online Xperience
is the first furry convention to officially partner with VRChat, and is the first virtual reality furry convention to operate without a pre-existing venue. It is also the oldest VR furry convention with the most venues, being one of the only active furry conventions in fandom history to run twice a year.
One of the official customer engineers and employees of VRChat,
Kiro Neem
, is a furry who created several UI features and custom avatars for the platform.
